Fitness & Muscle Building Advice for Hard Gainers

Posted In: Bodybuilding, Food & Nutrition, Health & Medicine

Hard gainers are those individuals who train equally hard as other people but somehow fail to make any muscle gains comparable to others. To achieve the big muscle results they seek, hard gainers usually need a lot more than hard training.

Hard gainers need to incorporate many different principles in order to achieve their muscle building ambitions and goals. Many bodybuilders get to discover this through the hard way of personal experience, which results in wasted time, energy and money.

Most aspiring muscle jocks go to the gym believing that there is no such thing as training too often, too much, or too long. They don’t bother to spend a respectable amount of time in constructing an effective training regimen for themselves.

Training on these principles ultimately results in lack of muscle growth… and to counter this problem hard gainers mistakenly put in more training hours at the gym. But in doing so, their results go from bad to worse.

Well it’s a good time to start facing the truth, folks!

In the sport of bodybuilding, effort and effect do not show any evidence of a linear relationship. On the contrary, our bodies are fuel burning entities which are very complex and depend upon delicate balances. Improper and excessive training breaks downs these balances. Simply put, if you burn your energy reserves faster than they get replenished, you’ll deplete the entire mechanism of strength, stamina and ability to recuperate.

If you are a beginner bodybuilder, you MUST get your body conditioned to handle increased levels of stress rather that jump right into the drive to achieve your goals quickly. It is wise for beginners to keep their workout schedule to a maximum of three days per week, training the whole body in each workout and training each muscle group with a maximum of three sets per exercise. Each set should be taken to total failure… not mental failure but physical failure. In other words, don’t quit mentally before your body physically forces you to quit.

Bring variety in the types of exercises employed. If you take up exercise “A” for a muscle group in one workout, then take up exercise “B” for the same muscle group in the next workout.

Split training is suggested for advanced bodybuilders. If your workout schedule is comprised of training four days a week – Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – separate body parts so that half of the body is worked on Monday and the other half on Tuesday.

As a muscle building addict you need to increase your protein intake with significant amounts than you take up in a normal active life. As soon as you substantially increase your protein consumption, your muscle size will gradually increase.

In fact, if you are a hard gainer then this may be your root problem. As per modern standards you need at least 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per pound of your body weight in order to provide the scenario for muscle mass growth. Unfortunately, most hard gainers don’t even consume fifty percent of this requirement.

Lastly, your training program should emphasize more on the use of free weights over machines. And always be sure that you have warmed up adequately before you start lifting weights for muscle building.

We’ll have more info that hard gainers can use in future posts, so stay tuned gym freaks!

What is Muscle Dysmorphia?

Posted In: Health & Medicine

Muscle dysmporhia (commonly misspelled muscle dismorphia) is a disorder that is characterized by the individual becoming obsessed with the thoughts that he/she is not muscular enough.

Those that suffer from muscle dysmorphia will usually think that they are too small even if they are more than the average when it comes to development in musculature.

To put it simple, this is a special type of dysmorphic disorder and will bring problems as time passes, including a need to take in steroids even if they are not justified.

People that suffer from muscle dysmorphia will have some changes in the regular behavior pattern. They will examine themselves in the mirror constantly, will hate what they see, will become distressed if they miss a workout session, a meal or if they do not get enough protein daily. They will often neglect the world around them including relationships, family and jobs. Individuals will also have constant delusions of being underweight or below average in musculature. When reaching extreme cases some people will even inject appendages with fluids in order to simulate muscular proportions that are not acceptable to them.

The good news is that muscle dysmoprhia is rare and can be treated easily through proper treatment.

In most cases, people that practice bodybuilding learn about their bodies and will not develop such a disorder.

As expected, muscle dysmorphia is more common in males and will usually appear during late teens period. The average onset age of muscle dysmorphia is 19.4 years and will usually appear in individuals that are already seen as muscular by others.

TV Ads With Muscular Actors Make Men Depressed

Posted In: Health & Medicine

Television images of muscular men lifting weights and endorsing products like deodorants leave men feeling depressed and unhappy with their muscularity, which may lead to steroid abuse and unhealthy, extreme exercising, University of Central Florida researchers say.

While a number of studies have shown how images of thin, beautiful models affect women’s self-esteem, UCF professor Stacey Tantleff-Dunn and graduate student Daniel Agliata are among the first to examine how “a culture of muscularity” affects the well-being and self-esteem of men.

Boys are exposed to the culture at an early age, when they play with muscular action figures, Tantleff-Dunn said.

“The level of muscularity and attractiveness that are idealized in the media often are not attainable for the average man,” Tantleff-Dunn said. “Men see more of a discrepancy between how they want to look, or think they need to look, and the image they see in the mirror. Such discrepancies can cause the dissatisfaction and low self-esteem that lead to extreme and often unhealthy actions, such as eating disorders, exercising too much and steroid abuse.”

The study involved 160 UCF students, who were divided into two groups for the study. Both groups watched an old game show episode, but they saw different, modern commercials during the game show.

One group saw ads that featured primarily muscular, young and bare-chested men in commercials advertising products such as deodorant and cologne. Another group saw ads for financial, telephone and automobile companies that mainly featured men aged 30 and older wearing business or casual clothes at home or in a business setting.

Students who saw ads with muscular, bare-chested men reported feeling more depressed and less satisfied with their muscles, while the other students reported feeling much less depressed after watching the show.

More studies are needed to show how the “culture of muscularity” affects the moods, dieting and workout habits of men, the researchers said.

“The key will be to help people develop realistic expectations about their appearance, as well as the appearance of others, and avoid buying into ideals that are impossible or unhealthy to attain,” Tantleff-Dunn said.

Why Is Drinking Alcohol Bad For Bodybuilders & Gym Jocks?

Posted In: Health & Medicine, Q & A

Most aspiring muscle guys who lift weights want to be huge…

But if you want to be the most ripped, muscular guy you can be, it is not going to happen if you get drunk even once/week. While a couple social drinks can actually be healthy, getting completely trashed can knock down your testosterone levels for 3-5 days. Testosterone builds muscle. The more testosterone you have, the bigger and leaner you become. You cannot expect to make any significant progress if you have the testosterone levels of a 12-year old girl for most of the week because of that big party Saturday night.

One major issue with the consumption of alcohol has to do with its effects on the release of growth hormone. Growth hormone is the substance in the body that plays a very large role when it comes to building muscle, stimulating other cell growth and development, and promoting optimal bone growth. When this hormone is low, you aren’t going to get the same amount of muscle development as you would when it’s at an optimal level.

Alcohol consumption also hinders recovery time as well!

Your diet may be perfect, and you may me training like an animal, but get drunk every week and you are wasting your time.

It’s common sense that you will meet way more hookups and fuck-buddies if you are muscular and ripped than if you are fat and drunk. If you often go out with friends or drink at bars because you are shy or trying to forget about something….. STOP RIGHT NOW!

You are completely wasting your gym membership every time you get plastered!

New Pill to Replace Many Anabolic Steroids

Posted In: Health & Medicine, Steroids

Scientists have finally come up with a pill that tricks your body into thinking it just exercised so you can develop strength, speed, muscle mass, endurance, hardness and more.

Many anabolic steroids are, of course, based on increasing testosterone levels; however, this new pill increases muscle mass via tricking the muscle into believing it just had a workout. It rebuilds the ‘lost’ muscle tissue, aka increasing muscle size, even without the workout.

What’s the ethical implication of such a drug? Well, expect this drug to be abused by every athlete to build speed and mass.

It will be the next steroid craze, and just wait until it’s in the open market kiddies!

There are actually two possible pills, AICAR and GW1516, both with the ability to help build muscle, increase stamina, and help with weight loss.

For the study, scientists split young adult mice up into two groups, with half of them taking part in exercise with the pill, and half taking part in exercise without the pill. The mice who took the pill were able to run for farther and faster, improving their endurance and speed. The mice who took the pill were able to run 77% longer, and 44% farther after a month taking the pill.

Many already forsee that athletes may be abusing the drug, which is why a test has already been developed to check for the drug in urine and blood samples… even before the drug’s public release!

California Bans Trans Fat

Posted In: Health & Medicine

California has now become the first state in the US to entirely ban food retailers and restaurants from using trans-fat.

Some cities, like New York City and Philadelphia have already banned trans fats.

Trans-fats are partially hydrogenated vegetable oils that are used to extend the shelf life of products and can turn oily foods into semi-solid foods. They’re used for frying and usually put into cakes, pastries, hot chocolate drink mixes, processed foods, margarines, and some fast foods.

They’ve been linked to coronary heart disease, can raise levels of bad cholesterol, have no nutritional benefit, and even a small reduction in consumption can cut heart disease. Totally yucky for bodybuilders and guys trying to honestly harvest new muscle growth.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said the legislation will represent a “strong step toward creating a healthier future.” The new legislation will take effect in 2010. Schwarzenegger will ban the use of trans-fats in oil, shortening and margarine used in spreads or for frying. And those found of violating the new law will be fined between $25 and $1,000.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Americans eat on average about 4.7lbs of trans-fats each year.
